Suggestions for a good book to read?

I'd like a challenging read, but I'm open to any suggestions you guys might have.


I like Laurie Halse Anderson, Sarah Dessen, Harry Potter, and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unforunate Events, but I also liked Brave New World, Flowers For Algernon, and The Lovely Bones.


What I'm not really into is really romance-y chick lit (The Notebook was okay) and really heavy science fiction.





Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Suggestions for a good book to read?
I really enjoy the Alex Rider series. Dont worry, its for guys too. This has adventure and action..i think you will enjoy it. If you like this author then you could try his other books. Like Raven's Gate series.

Reply:Check out the series His Dark Materials by the author Phillip Pullman. I actually was referred to this series by a video game magazine a few years ago. The magazine basically said that if you can't wait for the new Harry Potter books to come out, you should read these books in the meantime. I'm so glad I did, I actually read all three books twice. Also, the movie for the first book is coming out this winter called The Golden Compass.
Reply:You would probably like American Gods by Neil Gaiman. It's a very involving read and an amazing world you're very matter-of-factly thrown into. Try it.
Reply:I'm a big fan of Madeline L'Engle. A Wrinkle in Time could be considered sci-fi, which I generally don't like, but it's one of my favorite books.





I highly recommend A Ring of Endless Light otherwise.

Reply:Gizmo2's Hubby here, I will list just a few authors and such and hope you find something you like among them. Raymond E. Feist (Riftwar Saga, Conclave of Shadows and Krondor books),Steven Brust (Jhereg) Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks (All of their stuff) are good authors for Fantasy. Dean Koontz for Horror/Suspense, Larry Mcmurtry has some fine books set on the frontier and in contemporary small towns. Pat Conroy and John Grisham have a few good ones. Grisham's "The Firm" is much better than the movie. I saw someone mentioned Neil Gaimen...he has another called "Neverwhere" which is about an underground world in London that is pretty interesting. There are just so many good books out there and it's funny how they are hard to find sometimes. I started out reading Tolkien and any fantasy I could get my hands on when I was a kid and branched out from there. You would be suprised where you will find good books. Don't be afraid to look into the Classics either. There are awesome works there. Just have fun. Make a day of it when you go to the library or bookstore. Happy reading!
Reply:i think i know a book that you would LOVE!!! it's called 'Gregor the Overlander'. it's a whole series by suzanne collins (i'm not sure if i spelled the authors name right). its a GREAT book!!! if you like harry potter and the series of unfortunate events like i do (which you told us all you like both of those series) you would love this book!!!!!!! try it, i know you'll love it!

Reply:Along the Harry Potter lines are the Septimus Heap books. I think you'll like them.


I really enjoy a good mystery novel/thriller ... some of my faves are John Grisham, Faye and Jonathan Kellerman (separate books, married authors), Sue Grafton, Lillian Jackson Braun, Clive Cussler.


I also enjoy "military history" novels with Steven Coonts and W.E.B. Griffin topping the list.

Also, just wanted to add the vampire novels of Chelsa Quinn Yarbo. Not as well known as Anne Rice's, but I think much better done!
