Flowers for Algernon(short story)?

In what period of history was it written, like what was the significant events that happened in 1959, when it was written? I think it's the beginning of the era of computers or something.

Can you please provide a website link where you got the information from?

Flowers for Algernon(short story)?
Also, Flowers for Algernon is a novel, not a short story. I think that you should read it. You can google 1959 for events.
Reply:What a strange question!

Flowers for Algernon is a classic. Timeless, so to speak.

Forget 1959, it is not relevant.

Concentrate on Charlie, his hopes and dreams.

The rest is for academics.
Reply:just google it bro. "1959, significant events"
Reply:It was published in the April 1959 issue of Fantasy %26amp; Science Fiction. And who the hell cares about the "significant events" of that year? They have no relevance at all to the story.
Reply:Computers had been around since the 1940s, but in 1959 they were still using vacuum tubes, and what you have on your desk took up an entire room. I don't know what "era of computers" means, though. Home computers weren't common until the mid-1990s.

Here's a website that lists historical events that took place in 1959:

If that's not what you're looking for, what *are* you looking for? Can you be specific? Do you want to know what life was like then, or . . . ?

Ignore this if you need the info for homework: A story published in 1959 was probably written in 1958 at the latest. And it could've been written 10 or more years before that. In case you're trying to recreate the era when Keyes was writing it.
