What is the definition for intelligence?

I'm writing a response for the novel called Flowers for Algernon. And i have to write a definition for a term "intelligence" in my own words. help?

What is the definition for intelligence?
I read that story in the 8th grade, it was really enjoyable. I'm having trouble developing a definition that corresponds to that story but I'd say in Charlie's(was that the main characters name?) case intelligence was his reaction and view on the world that he saw. When he went through the experiment he lost all his abilitys to function socially and was too 'smart' to function with others... In this situation intelligence is the trait that allows people to function academically and socially. Or how people attempt to balance their social and academic skills to the best of their mental capacity.
Reply:The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge.

The faculty of thought and reason.

Superior powers of mind.

The human consciousness that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, and imagination.

The collective conscious and unconscious processes in a sentient organism that direct and influence mental and physical behavior.

The principle of intelligence; the spirit of consciousness regarded as an aspect of reality.

The faculty of thinking, reasoning, and applying knowledge: Follow your mind, not your heart.

A person of great mental ability: the great minds of the century.
