What are feelings that are shown in the story Flowers for algernon???? Also what is the structure??
The book is written like it was Charly's diary. It starts off with a lot of misspelled words, progresses to the writings of a man with a genius IQ, then regresses to how he was in the original.

Cliff Robertson may be recognized as Peter Parker's Uncle Ben.

In 'flowers for algernon' why is charlie ashamed on april 20?
Charlie was invited to a party on April 20; when he was dancing, the others kept sticking their feet out to trip him. It was the first time Charlie realized that the others liked having him around just so they could make fun of him.

In Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon, what is some proof that Charlie sacrificed happiness for intelligence?

I'm writing an essay and I'm having trouble finding proof.

In Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon, what is some proof that Charlie sacrificed happiness for intelligence?
I don't know about the proof, but I read the book years ago and I remember that before he started getting smarter the things people said to him may not have made sence, but yet didn't bother him because he didn't know any better. Yet, when his intelligence became greater he be came miserable knowing how people treated him.

Charlie repeatedly feels naked when he realizes that his friends are not really his friends. There is a recurring allusion to the story of Adam and Eve, from the Bible.

Good luck on your endeavor.

I have a Flowers for Algernon question?

I need two songs that would be in a soundtrack for Charlies life and what they would repesent in his life

I have a Flowers for Algernon question?
I was thinking about how Charlie's life changed as he gained intelligence, and how his world came crashing down when he found out it was temporary. It made me think of Space Oddity by David Bowie. The astronaut is taking off and everyone wants to know all about him (Charlie gets smarter and scientists from everywhere want to study him,) then a mishap occurs on the rocket and the astronaut is floating in space, adrift (Charlie finds out the effects of the operation are temporary.)
Reply:Thank You by Dido, it represents the his life because it is not so bad and because his teacher gave him a great opportunity.

How did the school treat Charlie in Flowers for Algernon(book)?

I guess you mean the people in charge of his experiment, not the people at the actual school part of the university. Anyway I guess they treated him like an experiment, and like they'd created him out of nothing and he should be eternally grateful.

How did the school treat Charlie in Flowers for Algernon(book)?
Well, when he was very intelligent, he ran his own tests, but as the change wore off he became less and less able to understand what he was doing, and eventually he was back at his old job as janitor. I didn't think the school really knew what to do with him.

What are two conflicts in flowers for algernon by daniel keyes please answer my question before 10PMET?

i need two conflicts. one thats external and one thats internal. internal is with yourself and external is with other people. please help!!

What are two conflicts in flowers for algernon by daniel keyes please answer my question before 10PMET?
External (and internal) conflicts--Charley discovers that the people he thought were his friends had only viewed him as "entertainment" and now resent his superior abilities. In other words, so-called "normal" people tend to look down upon those who are mental disabled. and are intimidated by those who flaunt extraordinary intelligence. When Charley's intellect reaches super-genius level and surpasses even his doctors', they, in turn, resent his abilities. Charley becomes baffled by this turn of events and finds himself isolated.

Internal--Charley discovers a newly-found sexual-emotional relationship with the opposite sex. In this instance, it's with his former teacher, Alice Kinnian.

What is the meaning of the title "Flowers for Algernon" ?

Algernon is the mouse that undergoes the same experimental procedure as Charlie to enhance his intelligence, and then eventually dies. The reference to flowers refers to Charlie's last request that "please if you get a chance, put some flowers on Algernon's grave in the back yard...".

What is the meaning of the title "Flowers for Algernon" ?
Algernon was the mouse that died. The mouse that briefly "flowered" and then died.
Reply:Algernon was the mouse and the guy felt sorry for the mouse when the mouse died because the operation reversed. It may have something to do with the flower bed or even the feelings the guy felt for him.

Has anyone read the book FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON?

What happens at the end? Im going to read the book i just want to know. i read the short story and i don't know the ending! Please tell me!

Has anyone read the book FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON?
Charlie falls in love with his former teacher, Miss Kinnian, but as his intelligence increases he passes her level and they are unable to relate to one another. As Charlie's intelligence peaks, Algernon unexpectedly loses his increased intelligence and dies. Charlie discovers that his intelligence increase is also only temporary. Unable to do anything to prevent the change, Charlie reverts to his original mental state in a swift reversal of his original growth. He tries to return to his original life and job at the plastic box factory but cannot stand everyone feeling sorry for him so he decides to move away. Despite regressing back to his former self, he still remembers that he was once a genius and cannot bear everyone feeling sorry for him. Consequently, he decides to go to live at the Warren State Home where nobody knows about the operation. In a final letter to his friends he asks them to put flowers on Algernon's grave.
Reply:Algernon dies. The main character loses his intelligence.
Reply:algernon gets stupid again and so does the retarted guy. algernon dies too.

Different versions on Flowers for Algernon?

I need to read the book and I have a different version from all the other people I am reading with, they have a newer published one with a picture of the mouse, and mine is the older one. I also need to know how many pages the newer one has, and every 31 pages in that one converted to the older version of the book many thanks to the person that can help me.

Different versions on Flowers for Algernon?
It looks like they just have a newer edition of the book. It shouldn't be a problem.

One thing to make sure of, though: Flowers for Algernon was published both as a novella and as a full-length novel. The way to tell the difference is in the novella Charlie's age is 37; in the full novel, he's 32. For that you DO need to have the same thing as the rest of the group because the full novel has people and things in the story that aren't in the novella. Fortunately, Charlie states his age at the very beginning of the story, so it's very easy to check.
Reply:its pretty much the same. i no cuz ive read it twice w/ the mouse and the old one.

Why shouldn't the book "flowers from Algernon" be banned?

I love the book. Can someone give some ideas of why it shouldn't be banned?

Why shouldn't the book "flowers from Algernon" be banned?
I don't think that book has ever been banned, or if it has, it's been banned in a small area not known to many people.

If you live in an area where "Flowers for Algernon" (not "from" so watch out for that if you're writing on it)... you can find out from newspapers and/or the local public library why it may have been banned.

The newspapers will be at the public library (going back some time) so, with help from a reference librarian there, you'll see if and why this book may have been banned.

If you want to know why it should NOT be banned, you already "love" the book, and so should have plenty of ammunition to take with you to a PTA or church group or city group (ADD: or to school) who may have banned this in your area.

1.) There is no pornography

2.) There is no 'hot-topic' politics

3.) There is/are no 'magic, wizards, witches, gays, god-bashers, etc.'

4.) What is 'scientifically' done in the book to Charlie is something he is allowed to agree to or not

5.) When the 'experiment' is over, it's over

6.) Whoever is banning this book in your area ought to take some time to study what is already a done-deal in genetics these days; and to study who are subjects of studies, and why and what they stand to 'win' or 'lose.'

I'm way done.
Reply:Because it is an example of great literature, and I believe that it is one of the best books that I have ever read.

Personally, I can't stand censoring anyway, and I think that if it ever occurs to someone that ANY book should be banned (for instance, in a school environment) that they should have the PARENTS decide, NOT the school board.
Reply:Somebody is thinking about banning Flowers from Algernon we read that book just this year in my english class. It was a good ,excellent book and I don't know why someone would want to ban it?
Reply:Why was it banned in the first book? I read it for school just last year.
Reply:I don't recall it being banned and can't think of any reason why it would be.

I need to write an essay on the book "Flowers for Algernon and the Movie Charly.?

I need to include in my intro the bases of comparison/contrast by which the items will be analyzed. How can I start the introduction paragraph.

I need to write an essay on the book "Flowers for Algernon and the Movie Charly.?
How about talking about:

Similarities

Differences

Are the book and movie more similar or different?

Once you have jotted down some notes in all of these areas, you can go back and start the intro paragraph with something like,

"When comparing the book Flowers for Algernon [underline] and the movie "Charly,"

* there are many similarities and only a few minor differences, making the movie a good adaptation of the book.

OR

*the two works differ so significantly that they are truly two different interpretations of the basic story of Charlie Gordon and Algernon.

The story is told through a series of progress reports written by Charlie Gordon, the main character and first-person narrator. The progress reports detail Charlie's experiences—both external and internal—as his I.Q. increases and finally deteriorates again after experimental surgery. More…….

What are some positive results of the operation in Flowers for Algernon?

1) It is possible to increase one's intelligence.

2) When done so, the intelligence level increases at an extremely fast pace, and would exceed normal intelligence for the individual.

But what is learned from the story that it is wrong to try plant artificial intelligence, because when an advantage needs to be gained, something needs to be sacrificed. In Flowers for Algernon, the advantage of possessing huge amounts of intelligence, the life has to be sacrificed.

Would Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes be a good story...?

would flowers for algernon by daniel keyes be a good story for a journey of the hero essay?

%26amp; if it is a good idea, would the 'hero' i would write about be, Charlie Gordon?

thanks for the help! (:

Would Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes be a good story...?
Well, if you had to choose someone it would have to be Charlie, but I think Charlie is more just the main character than a hero in most senses. He clearly changes, but he doesn't make many big decisions, most of his decisions being made for him by his condition/ pills. I think Flowers for Algernon is more about the idea of getting smarter rather than any particular individual.
Reply:I love that book. I think Charlie Gordon would be a good hero because he was unafraid to leap into the unknown (the operation that made him smart.)

Why should the book "Flowers for Algernon" be banned?

Uhm yeah, answer the question please(: aha, I love this book but my wonderful teacher is deciding to challenge me and I have to write a 5 paragraph essay on why I think it should be banned. Great, right? Well yeah, I can't think of any good reasons so if you'd help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it :D Please and thank you(:

Why should the book "Flowers for Algernon" be banned?
Why SHOULD it be banned? What kind of teacher would ask a stupid question like that??? I guess you could say because of the sexual themes like all the psychological observations Charly has as he gets smart. And the violent scene where he tries to rape Alice. I seriously can't think of any more.
Reply:In January 1970, the school board of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada, as well as Calgary, Alberta, Canada, banned the novel-length expansion of Flowers for Algernon from the local grade-nine curriculum and the school library, after a parent complained that it was "filthy and immoral." The president of the BC Teachers' Federation criticized the action. Flowers for Algernon was part of the BC Department of Education list of approved books for grade nine and was recommended by the BC Secondary Association of Teachers of English. A month later, the board reconsidered and returned the book to the library; they did not, however, lift its ban from the curriculum.

While the full novel does contain material about the character's personal life (that is, flashbacks of experiences of puberty that may be objectionable to some readers), the original short story does not. It is on the American Library Association list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000 at number 47.
Reply:Hmmm, I really can't think of anything. {It's an amazing book} Maybe the sexual themes? Sorry I can't help more. =[
Reply:Because its making fun of the mentally challenged? possibly.

I love that book to, so its kinda hard. sorry =/

IQ tests - and the results depend on where in the story you are talking about. He goes from being mentally retarded to being a super genius after participating in the same treatment used on the mouse Algernon. In the end, he reverts to his former state. Pax - C.

and can you help me answers these question

1)At the start of the story, describe the test that charlie is given: how does it make him feel?(use adjectives)

2) Why does Charlie carry around a rabbits foot in his picket? What does it say about the person he is.

3) "Algernon and me had the same amazed to do." explain what Charlie means, and what is the test with Algernon about?

4) compare and contrast Charlies feelings before and after the surgery

I love the book. An even better version of the same story idea is Camp Concentration by Thomas Disch.

Reply:You also forget that the guy becomes really smart and still doesn't fit in to normal society. The mouse dies, I think, and the retarded becomes retarded again. He never did fit in to society.
Reply:Uh - not to mistreat the mentally retarded, I guess?

No, I think the theme is ethics - is it OK to change a person, even if it's "for their own good?" And what is good for a person, anyway? Who decides that, especially in the case of somebody like Charlie who can't really decide things for himself? Is it OK to "enhance" a person if the person will later revert?
Reply:That you have to find happiness in your life and that changing for other people won't fix your problems.

What was the theme of Flowers for Algernon and what was the irony about it?

The theme was: intolerance toward others who are different leads to bad things (i.e. Charlie getting the procedure done which still made him feel alienated and ultimately killed him). The theme is that human beings ought to respect and take care of each other. If Charlie hadn't have been picked-on, he would have been okay. The irony was that he wanted so much to be smarter that he underwent a risky operation and became intelligent. But he became so intelligent that he couldn't relate to his peers anymore and it frightened them. The poor guy risked it all only to experience rejection again and then to lose his life.

I hope you actually read the story (which doesn't take long at all and is worth a few hours) and are having a tough time grasping the concept. I'm trying to help you out. But I have to warn you: if you take my exact words as your own, that is called plaigarism, which is a serious crime in the academic world.

Hope that helps!

What was the theme of Flowers for Algernon and what was the irony about it?
Read the book.
Reply:The theme is medical and scientific experimentation using humans and the irony is that Charley was given a chance to see the world as a normal man and then it was cruelly taken from him. Pax - C.

Has anyone ever read Flowers for Algernon?

If you have, is Charlie Gordon a real person, or is he just a made up character in the story?

Has anyone ever read Flowers for Algernon?
Charlie Gordon Is a purely fictional character, there are real people named Charlie Gordon but they do not relate to the book Flowers for Algernon what so ever. If there was then the book would have to be correct but experimenting on humans is illegal and inhumane so the book would never actually come true in real life so the possibility of Charlie Gordon from the book being a real person is false. I hope I was of help.
Reply:I think he was made up. There is no such treatment that will make a mentally challanged person super normal. Especially 30 years ago or so when that was written.
Reply:It was originally published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy %26amp; Science Fiction.

In 1968 it was made into a move starring Cliff Robertson -- who won an oscar for his portrayal.

The movie was EXCELLENT!

How was Charlie, from Flowers for Algernon, a less part of society after the surgery??

I only know he was too smart to have simple conversations with people so then a became lonely.

How was Charlie, from Flowers for Algernon, a less part of society after the surgery??
well he became so cerebral in thinking, that he couldn't connect w/ normal intellectual people

perhaps he felt above others, because he was "too smart", and that's what made him think he could attack that woman in a sexual manner

hmm.. i read this SO long ago. try reading reviews on wikipedia or critiques! good luck
Reply:I read this 5 years ago so i might not be right.

But he was a Freak his old friends from where he worked were freaked out by the sudden change, they had no idea what had happen to him since he was not aloud to tell. He was even smarter than the scientist and his old teacher, who he never got to go to class to see any alonger, he had no friends beside Algernon.

I know that although he lost his intelligence in the end, he learned how to empathize, love, and fully comprehend situations and that he should have gone through the surgery

because of that, but I want to know why he shouldn't have.

In the book Flowers for Algernon, should Charlie Gordon have taken the surgery?
That story made me bawl like a baby when I finished reading it. I agree with you, the surgery was a good thing for him, but it makes you question the ethics of the researchers running the experiment.
Reply:In a way,

"ignorance is bliss" as the saying goes. and in that sense, if he didn't have the surgery, he wouldn't have understood those situations in which he found out he was actually being laughed at instead of with. so by not gaining intelligence and learning human nature, he would have still lived a long life as well as he wouldn't have to endure the taunts from the people.
Reply:In my own opinion, I feel that he would have been better off if he had not decided to go through with the surgery. Then he wouldn't have hurt and loss many of the people that had been close to him, and he wouldn't have lost his job at the factory.
Reply:Well, a reason why he shouldn't have taken the surgerey would be:

he lost his intelligence in the end

being smart alienated him in the same way being dumb did

hope that helped

Where can i find monologues from FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON?

preferably short, and done by charly portraying an upset or downtrodden feeling.

Where can i find monologues from FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON?
See if this works.
Reply:You will most likely have to purchase a single (or perusal) copy of the acting edition of the play from the publisher. If there is one available, I'm not sure. I'm familiar with the book and I know that there was a musical (ME %26amp; ALGERNON?) in the 80's that lasted only a few performances on B'way. You can, as someone suggested, fashion your own monologue from passages of the book.

Playwright/Lyricist
Reply:re-read the script, go through it and find a good monologue for what youre looking for, and if you cant find one cut your own... it can be risky but if you are set on doing something and you cant find one that pops out at you give it a shot.
Reply:Get a copy of the play and hopefully you can piece together something. You could probably find something in an anthology, but it is always better to piece it together yourself.

How do the stories -All Summer in a Day, -Flowers for Algernon and -There will come soft rains link to Utopia?

How do these short stories link to the idea of utopia?

How do the stories -All Summer in a Day, -Flowers for Algernon and -There will come soft rains link to Utopia?
Flowers for Algernon relates because they're trying to fix people. It's been a while since I've read the book, so bear with me.

The illness (I can't remember what it is) that the man has that they're trying to take away makes him unique, even though it's not really a desirable trait. But science thinks they can cure him of it, and a cure for what he has would be epically world-changing.

But the fix doesn't work, and so the man is that much farther away from being "perfect."

In a utopian world, no one is sick, and people are all basically the same, at the same level. To be able to cure someone of an abnormality would bring us all that much closer to being "perfect" and the same.
Reply:There will come soft rains is about an automated house continuing to function after the humans have died. The house would be Utopian.

I don't see a connection between Flowers for Algernon and Utopia and I'm not familiar with the third story.

What's up with the controversy over Flowers for Algernon?

Everyone's all like "aah this guy has sex all through the book and yadda yadda yadda"

It's not true, people! Get it through your thick impenetrable skulls!

Any comments/questions/concerns on this?

What's up with the controversy over Flowers for Algernon?
It has been years since I read that book and I don't recall the main character as having sex throughout the book. I only remember that when he was a "normal" man he did have a relationship. I should read that book again...it was an excellent book from what I recall. If there is sex in the book at all there will always be people who simply focus on that and ignore the rest of the message and story of the book.
Reply:Charlie does not have sex in the book. However in the movie "Charly" based off the book, he does it with his teacher.
Reply:he doesn't do it in the book, only in the movie.

I need the original one not the novel he wrote later. I need an online source that has it.

Where can I find the original novelette version of "Flowers for Algernon"?
Truly-free.org has it listed but it doesn't say whether or not it's the full length novel or the novelette. Here's the link for the site so you can check it out for yourself; when you get there click on the author's name (Daniel Keyes): http://www.truly-free.org/#fF

Good luck to you! :-)

What are some scenes that were important to developing the conflict in Flowers for Algernon?
I had to read this short story a couple of years ago in Reading class...hmmm....let me try to remember....Well, Charlie gets the surgery that is supposed to make him more intellegent. That is kind of important. And the scene where he sees that mentally retarded man is important...he laughs and realizes that he used to be like the mentally retarded man...so sad.

i need to know the first quote in the book flowers for algernon does anyone f theres a website where i can get the book online? or if you have the book can you please tell me !!

Whats the first quote in the book flowers for algernon?
"Any one who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eyes are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light, which is true of the mind's eye, quite as much as the bodily eye; and he who remembers this when he sees any one whose vision is perplexed and weak, will not be too ready to laugh; he will first ask whether that soul of man has come out of the brighter life, and is unable to see because unaccustomed to the dark, or having turned from darkness to the day is dazzled by the excess of light. And he will count the one happy in his condition and state of being, and he will pity the other; or, if he have a mind to laugh at the soul which comes from below into the light, there will be more reason in this than in the laugh which greets him who returns form above out of the light into the den"

-Plate, The Republic

I hope this is what you mean, it's the long quote at the beginning of the book.

You tell me the best i will vote for you

What is the setting-time place weather in the book of flowers for algernon?-why did the author set it this way
You know, I read that book years ago, and the long short story it grew out of, and I even saw the movie made from it (Charly -- with the r backwards -- starring Cliff Robertson), and I don't remember a thing about the weather, time, place, any of that. The story's about the impact the gift of intelligence has on a moron, and the tragedy that it was taken away again.

What are the differences between the "Flowers for Algernon" book and movie?

the most recent verson of the "Flowers for Algernon" movie, not the old one, thanx i have to right an essay on it

What are the differences between the "Flowers for Algernon" book and movie?
If you are planning to write an essay, you will need to be careful of your spelling. The book is so good, the old movie is so good--I didn't even know there was a new one. Who is in it? I can't even imagine anyone else other than Cliff Robertson playing Charly (that is the way he spelled it).
Reply:It's been a long time since I've read the book or seen the movie, but as I recall the movie followed the book pretty closely.

Do you have to write an essay on the book or on the comparison of the book and the movie? You should do your own research instead of asking other people to do it for you. That's how you learn.

What is the main message of the book Flowers for Algernon?

I need to finish this sentence:

The overall message of the story "Flowers for Algernon" is _________

i need something as simple as possible

if you could help that would be greatttt :)

What is the main message of the book Flowers for Algernon?
When I read the book back in high school I remember I had to write an essay on it asking the same question-what is the main message of the book?

My answer was basically: Flowers for Algernon is a story of understanding and tolerance.
Reply:It's been such a long time since I read that book, but I believe the overall message is to accept who you are because the main character was below average intelligence, then he became intelligent, but loss his knowledge in the end.
Reply:flowers for algernon is the story of the mouse and the guy who are super smart, right? So the main message would probably be something along the lines of treat all people equal( which what's his name's "friends" don't laern until the end) intelligence must be earned ( He grows dumber as fast as he grew smarter) or perhaps it's just a cautionary tale about messing with the human body.
Reply:Ignorance is bliss would be one. Intelligence has two-fold disadvantages: Everything Charlie previously believed was not as it seemed once he became smarter. He realized who he thought were his friends were actually making sport of him. He didn't even realize it but thought of them as good friends. He also sees the scientists conducting the experiement on him in a different light once his intelligence surpasses their own. The story is about consciousness and awareness. How we see others and view our circumstances is dependent on our awareness of our social position.
