American Idol and Flowers for Algernon....?

Why do I keep thinking of that book every time I watch American Idol lately? What is wrong with this equation?

American Idol and Flowers for Algernon....?
You think Simon is Charlie and pretty soon he will be a blithering idiot. Or maybe it is Paula and she is already slipping. Who knows.
Reply:Are you saying that someone on American Idol reminds you of Charlie from Flowers for Algernon?

Cause if so, I don't know what you are talking about!
Reply:idk you figure it out
Reply:Algernon the rat is a lot smarter than most of those wannabes.
Reply:What are you talking about??????????????

Do we Resent smart people? why? where was this witnessed in Flowers for Algernon?

Resentment towards smart people can very from person to person. In some people it can be very obvious that they resent smarter people and in other people it can be a subconscious factor. In Flowers for Algernon it is witnessed when Charlie becomes smart and his friends not longer want to be around him. In addition, when he becomes really smart they all avoid him. However this could also be because they see how awful they were to him and do not want to face him.

Excellent book, sad testiment about human nature

Has anyone read or seen Flowers for Algernon (if so, how is it)?
I seen and read it. Don't remember much because we did it for high school English class. The novel was definitely better than the movie.
Reply:great book tearjerker for sure it is a great way of showing humans are not science projects
Reply:I did both. It was pretty good. However, i thought that it was soooooo sad. I almost cried, and being such uh uncaring person at times about books, it actully almost had me in tears. But it was great. I read and saw the movie last year. I don't remember why though, i think my teacher was bored, LOL.

With the exception of the made-for-TV flick, were there any movies based on the novel 'Flowers For Algernon'?

Charly (1968)

starring Cliff Robertson (Oscar for Best Actor), Claire Bloom, Lilia Skala, Leon Janney, Ruth White, Dick Van Patten

IMDB synopsis:

Charles Gordon is a retarded adult male struggling to survive in the world. His frequent attempts at learning, reading, and writing prove worthless. His teacher, Miss Kinian, takes Charley to the clinic where he is observed by doctors who have him "race" the mouse Algernon, who wins thanks to an experiment that greatly raised his intelligence. Charley undergoes the same treatment, and his world changes.

From IMDB:

Cliff Robertson saw more than one TV production he'd starred in turned into hit movies with other actors, such as "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962). So, when he starred in the 1961 "The United States Steel Hour" (1953) production of "The Two Worlds of Charlie Gordon," based on the short story-turned-novel "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, he bought the rights and later was responsible for turning that story into this film.

So, "Flowers for Algernon" (2000 TV) was the third production of Keyes' story.

With the exception of the made-for-TV flick, were there any movies based on the novel 'Flowers For Algernon'?
Yes, it was called "Charly" and Cliff Robertson won an Oscar for his performance
Reply:Yep, Charley
Reply:Charly (1968) or Flowers for Algernon (2000) (TV)

Flowers for algernon question...?

what's a good thesis for this question..coz im kinda done with my conclusion(for the global thingy..like relation with readers)..and the intro..except thesis..now i cant start with the body paragraphs..coz i can't think of any thesis..

Explain the effects one's determination has on the character's outlook on life or his/her relationship wit others or themselves. What idea does the author develop using the theme determination/perseverance?

pleaseee help...

Flowers for algernon question...?
How about this?

Human beings have a finite life span, and part of being human is having to contend with the loss of abilities toward the end. Charlie's time in the sun is brief, and, like an Alzheimer's sufferer, his grieving scarcely fades even when he can no longer comprehend his losses. He is not able to accept the new, sincere friendship and protectiveness shown by his factory friends--he thinks they're sorry for him and feels shame. Yet he intends to start a new life, and keep trying to learn. His determination exemplifies the heroism and resilience the human spirit is capable of exhibiting.
Reply:I think the thesis should be about scientific experimentation and how cruel it was to experiment on Charly and give him false hope. Or how about a thesis on experimenting on animals and people who use only cruelty free products? Pax - C

FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON....Questions....?

Yes, I read the book.

I just can't find these answers ANYWHERE.

I checked the internet already and asked my friends, no one knows.

1. How is Charlie's improved memory more painful?

2. Why does Charlie encounter hostility at the bakery?

3. How do Charlie's parent's disagree over him?

Any help?

THANKS! =]

FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON....Questions....?
1 Because he sees how people laughed at him before.

2 Not sure I remember, maybe cuz the guys who laughed at him before resent his improvement?

3 ??

Long time ago I read, sorry.
Reply:It has been a while for me, but Charlie's parents disagree quite a bit. The mother refuses to believe there's anything wrong and believes she can make him normal (until Norma comes along). I think the father thinks he should be put away.
Reply:1) although the other guys are right, you can get deeper by thinking about how sad it is that he gets a taste of being just as normal (and eventually smarter) than everyone, but it gets taken away from him.

2)hostility? I haven't read the story in years, so if theres a specific hostile event then don't listen to me but I assume the guys make fun of him just cause they can.

3) don't remember, should be a pretty simple answer though
Reply:I can only answer the first one. When Charley stops his child like behavior and becomes a conscious with adult behavior, he sees all the ugliness going on in the world where he was oblivious to this in a child like state.

Flowers for Algernon Help!?

We were reading some of this book in school. My teacher gave the class questions and I need help on a few. Theres 4 I just could not find.

1. How do charlies feelings toward miss kinnian change throughout the whole story?

2.How do Charlies feelings toward the doctors change after the operation?

3.Why was charlie upset about the incident with the dishwasher?

4.How does Charlie's personality change once he becomes a genius?

Flowers for Algernon Help!?
I think you need to go back and re-read the story more slowly. The answers are all there, otherwise your teacher would not be asking the questions.

Homework is designed to help you learn how to do your own research. If we give you the answers, the point is lost. Besides, the teacher will know if it's not your own work. My mom taught English (including 'Flowers for Algernon'!) for 40 years, and she could always tell...
Reply:re-read the story.
Reply:1. She goes from being a revered teacher, a figure of adult competence, to being an equal. Charly stops revering her, and contemplates having an adult romantic relationship with her.

2. Charly's intelligence increases beyond the doctors'.

3. Charly is upset because he remembered -- with shame -- that he'd once been like the dishwasher. He'd been made fun of, and hadn't realized what was going on.

4. He becomes intelligent and driven. He can no longer tolerate his former coworkers, because he can remember the humiliation at their hands.

Sorry, this is very sketchy. I haven't read this book since, maybe, 1983. You should read the book. I highly recommend it.
Reply:1. Charles's feelings change gradually, With the surgery completed, he begins to find interest in Ms. K and would like to have a relationship with her.

4. Once Charles becomes a genius, he becomes a little pompous and even egotistical. This, in turn, makes him lose his friends and all of his happiness in his simple life.

Sorry, but i read the book awhile ago and i cant remember the other two.

Good Luck

Flowers for algernon?

i'm having so much trouble with this book.

please be as detailed as possible.

if you anwser everything kinda right, i'll automatically give you best anwser...

1.list the 5 W's and how for the background of the book.

2. three symbols in the book

3.what is the authors attitude as presented to the reader

Flowers for algernon?
I'll only answer one, because you need to find them yourself...a little research on Barnes %26amp; Noble site , perhaps? Things are always better when you work for them.

3. The author's moral of the story, if you will, is that things are not necessarily better if you change them to fit the surrounding society. His attitude is that sometimes things that are changed makes them worse than before, in this case, the main character is taught of his own deficiencies when he was perfectly happy before. Ignorance is sometimes bliss, in other words.
Reply:This book is not difficult if you read it. The list of questions you gave made it sound that you wanted us to do your homework for you. Also I strongly believe tthese were the questions the teacher gave you.

Next time try looking up summaries for this book, or the plot outline. That should help you understand the book better.

SYMBOLISM / MOTIFS / IMAGERY / SYMBOLS

A lot of the writing is bare and simple, as befits the narrator, but it is also a psychological study. Hence, the latter part the book has several symbols, sometimes used as links, which set off associations with the protagonist’s memories.

The author uses the knife as a repeated symbol of the mother’s threats and punishments. He has dreams of sex, ending with the woman carrying a bloody knife. When he tries to make love to Alice, he can’t go on. Later, he dreams of being chased by someone holding a bloody knife. This is later connected to his mother’s threats when he had an unconscious erection while observing a girl. It is also linked with the knife his mother picks up, when she demands that his father should take him away from home. More……

Reply:Haylie,

This is a very difficult book to understand. For the first question, they are asking you to list the 5 W's: who, what, when, where, and why. In the second question they are asking you to list symbols, as in parts of the book that represent something. The third question asks you to consider the way in which it was written. Was the author sympathetic to Algernon? Did he feel pity, was he proud? I hope this helps. It has been years since I read this book, but I remember that it was a good one.

Whats the meaning of this quote? (its from the book flowers for algernon)?

"Any one who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eyes are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light, which is true of the mind's eye, quite as much as the bodily eye; and he who remembers this when he sees any one whose vision is perplexed and weak, will not be too ready to laugh; he will first ask whether that soul of man has come out of the brighter life, and is unable to see because unaccustomed to the dark, or having turned from darkness to the day is dazzled by the excess of light. And he will count the one happy in his condition and state of being, and he will pity the other; or, if he have a mind to laugh at the soul which comes from below into the light, there will be more reason in this than in the laugh which greets him who returns form above out of the light into the den"

Whats the meaning of this quote? (its from the book flowers for algernon)?
it is obviously intended you should reflect on Charlie's situation in the novel in the light of the quotation from Plato

I would also suggest it is pretty pointless if you are intending to answer questions on a book you have not read or even possess a copy of to read
Reply:I'll give it a shot....

i think it has something to do with turning over a new leaf or choosing who you want to be but.. it's way too wordy for me

Flowers for Algernon was banned!?
Why would anyone want to ban "Flowers For Algernon"? I liked the book alot! There are some love scenes in the book, but come on, most parents probably let their kids watch stuff on tv and listen to worse stuff in music. God forbid there should be something like that in a book!
Reply:This is weird. It's like you're posting a homework question and caring about the book at the same time.

But yeah, lots of books have been banned. One of the Junie B. Jones books was banned, and that's a second grader book. You could probably find the answers to the question you're asking someplace else online. I don't know where, though. Sorry.
Reply:Banned in some places (temporarily). Other.

Yeah I want that book for christmas plz telll me a bit bout it..

Is flowers for algernon a good book if so plz tell me bout it!!!?
Oh yeah! I loved that book. It really is for the person who doesn't enjoy the science fiction genre. However, it is a difficult read since the subject's writing is substandard in the beginning then "improves" as his intelligence increases. The book is about a psychological doctor's subject who receives surgery that makes him smarter. However, he decides to become "dumb" again because he begins to see the jokes in his lifetime were on him and chooses to regret it. It's basically a book about self-denial. Oh yeah, the flowers are just a symbol of the main character's progress in his intelligence.
Reply:It's pretty good. Some of the writing is hard to read, just because of the style it is written in. I liked it; we read it for class last year. It's a bit odd at first, but it picks up. Happy reading!
Reply:it's wonderful, but it's also quite sad, especially at the end. make sure u've got a box of tissues.

God Bless!!
Reply:It is one of my favorites. It is sad though. It starts with this guy named charlie he is mildly retarted (lack of a better word) he works hard at a bakery, people are assholes to him because they think they can be, he befriends a women, he gets an experimental surgery done to increase his intelligence all the while writing in a journel about his ongoings. The journal shows him progressing over time intellectually. There is a mouse called algernon who hs had the same surgery as him but earlier. that is the jist read it theres lots more
Reply:It's a good book. I think it's about a story involving a boy and a beloved pet mouse.

I'll have to re-read it again. It's been 22 years since I've read it.
Reply:It's good. A man with a low IQ signs up for an experiment that may increase his intelligence. He also makes freinds with a mouse that's been through the same procedure.
Reply:Hmm. yeah it's sad. It reminds us of our humanity.
Reply:I only know the short version.

I think it is phantastic, because it makes you realize your own humble privilege of being cleverer than Charlie Gordon, the narrator.

Great read really!!!
Reply:I liked it when I was a kid. Quite sad though...

Can someone give me the whole flowers for algernon short storry!!!?
Well, Flowers For Algernon is about a man who has a mental disease. He is ridiculed by his co-workers and is constantly taken advantage of. You may notice when reading the story that the man has very poor spelling skills.

Algernon is a mouse that has a similar problem. Algernon runs a maze everyday along with the man (whose name has just failed me, sorry). Algernon has been a test mouse for a treatment the doctors are thinking about giving to the man.

When Algernon shows signs of improvement, the man recieves the treatment and shows signs of improvement in his diary entries.

The man soon realizes that he's been taken advantage of his entire life.........

Flowers for algernon book?

have a question that is killing me and i need help with it...the question is,

- Debate the following statement. As Charlie matured intellectually, his emotional growth kept pace.

I need a few sentences answering this question. if you could give me a few sentences answering this question I would be so great.

thanks

Flowers for algernon book?
no, not at first. his intellect was out stripping his emotional maturity. what caused him to change was when he realized that when he was laughing at the "intellectualy challanged" man at the party, he was laughing at what he was and could return to being. that realization make him mature and start seeking a cure.
Reply:even though charlie wasgetting smarter he stil was getting emotions as before when he wasnt smart but now he realizes people are makin ufn of him and its upsetting him i read the book so ask me more questions f you want!
Reply:Actually, when he matured intellectually, he matured emotionally as well. He realized that his "friends" were making fun of him because of his intellect. He also experienced feelings such as love.

I hope I helped, I don't remember much more. I read the book last year.

Has eney one ever read Flowers for Algernon i have i thought it was grate how about you and y?

The Book, the Script, or the Movie? I haven't read the book, the script was great, and the movie went a little weird after that scene where Charlie becomes a motorcycling hippie after his teacher isn't interested in him. But the script for the stage rendition is excellent.

Has eney one ever read Flowers for Algernon i have i thought it was grate how about you and y?
How is this a physics question?

Yes, it was a good book. But wouldn't this be more appropriate in another section? Aside from which it doesn't help to propagate any specific understanding. Who cares if others have read the book?

Was there something of specific importance you wanted to discuss, such as recombinant DNA, the perils and potential benefits of meddling with the human genome or medicines...

As I recall the book is about a rat and/or an intellectually challenged person getting similar treatment that made them both very smart. But eventually wore off or something? (Or am I remembering a different book?)

So, what is your actual question?

Yes, I've read the book. A long time ago. And it was nice.

The end.

Or were you looking for more? ;o] If so, maybe add some details and get a discussion going. Seriosly though it should probably go in the literature section of answers.yahoo.com not in physics/science.

Thx. ;o]

Didn't mean to come off snippy, just, y'know. Seemed slightly misplaced and not really a useful question for this category. Since literature =/= physics.

Flowers for Algernon question...?

Why did Doc.Strauss think Charlie would be a good subject for the experiment?

Flowers for Algernon question...?
Great story to read. If I can find my copy I think I will re-read it. .............I think one of the main reasons he chose Charlie is because of his honest simplicity. He would be able to note the most rudiment improvements to Charlies abilities because he was so set in his daily routines. Also that Charlie was so well know by fellow workers at the bakery, they to would be obvious to any advancements that he might exhibit. Like when he did the mixing job for the fellow who thought it would be fun to show his inabilities just to be shown up by Charlies new found abilities instead. Hope this helps you out. If not than thanks to you for getting me interested in an old favorite. I believe that was John Whydenham or something like that who wrote it. Thanks.
Reply:He was looking for someone who was both reatrded and co-operative. Many of those who are retarded are not all that willing to work with others from feelings of inferiority. Charlie was a perennial student in night classes that he could not possibly accomplish successfully, and in many ways was a rather tragic/heroic figure in his struggles before the operation.
Reply:Because Charlie was retarded.

Have you read "Flowers for Algernon"?

here is an expert from it.

I beat Algernon! I dint even know i beat him until Burt the tester told me. Then the seecon time I lost because I got so exited I fell off the chair before I finished. But after that I beat him 8 more times. I must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon. But I dont feel smarter.

I wanted to race Algernon some more but Burt said thats enough for one day. They let me hold him for a minit. Hes not so bad. Hes soft like a ball of cotton. He blinks and when he opens his eyes their black and pink on the eges.

I said can i feed him because I felt bad to beat him and I wanted to be nice and make friends. burt said no Algernon is a very special mouse with an operashun like mine,

( The misspelled words are like that int he book.)

It shows a lot about the human intellect.

It was also a pretty good story.

Thanks for the question though
Reply:yeah, thats such a sad book, I has to read it for English in 8th grade, its so depressing
Reply:no but sounds like something i would read. I will go pick it up. Thanks
Reply:The movie was called "Charly" (1968). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charly

Peter Parker's "Uncle Ben" won the Academy Award for that role.
Reply:one of my all time favorite books!! I think that there's a movie with Aaron Eckhart that's based on it. With Elisabeth Shue.

They all have a theme of self-discovery. What does the protagonist learn about himself in his 'journey".

Have you ever read the book flowers for algernon?
Read a 100 pages a day..pull and all nighter if you have to..it's really a good book...it has a movie if you'd rather watch that it's not called flowers for algernon though it's called Charly with the l backwards in the title...go to pinkmonkey.com or cliffnotes.com or sparknotes.com to get the chapter summaries...I suggest you read the book though in case your teacher has seen the movie...
Reply:200 pages would barely take a day to read, especially if it is a novel and not a scientific text where you have to actually learn new concepts and ideas. You are lazy.
Reply:how funny im in 8th grade and am reading it now too, but we have a shortened version in our textbook, i say look up cliff notes on it, im sure ull find some!
Reply:Try Sparknotes for a detailed synopsis or watch the movie "Charly." It's a sad book, but it's really good. I recommend reading it at some point, even if you don't have time to read it before the exam.

Don't ever let a long book put you off--some of the best ones are the long ones!
Reply:uhm..read it.

yeah, it's a really sad book.

watch the movie
Reply:no I haven't

I'm in eight grade too!!

but you should really read it!!!

you can read 200 pages in 2 days

last year I read a 364 page in 1 day

just do it

get of the computer and start now

or fake sick on Monday to get you and extra day to read
Reply:No I haven't. I suggest you read as much of it as you can.
Reply:If I were you, I'd try to find the movie adaptation and watch it this weekend. It's called "Charly" and stars Cliff Robertson.
Reply:That book is great...I remember having to read that back when I was in the 8th grade was well. It was one of the few books that I actually did enjoy reading. The movie "Charley" is good, but it doesn't really do the book justice.

By the way, reading the book is the only appropriate answer here. It will work out much better than trying to weasel your way through school by getting other people to do your work for you.
Reply:never even heard of the book and I read lots.
Reply:no
Reply:You could watch the movie. Its called "Charly" I believe. I read that in high school or junior high. Why didn't you just read the book and save yourself the worry?

One of book's settings for Flowers for Algernon?
the place that makes you feel that the whole story is important like the classroom because that is where he met the teacher(i don't remember the name) and she changed his whole life. just make what made you feel that the story feel different.
Reply:Well, in my opinion, I think you should make a model of the MAIN setting or where it mostly takes place. If the setting is someone's home, you can get a shoebox, and be creative with it. Put paper dolls inside of the shoebox and draw a house in the background or make a house, or even get a small toy house to glue inside.

Glad to help,

Flowers for Algernon is about a man with an I.Q. of 68 who becomes a genius because of a scientific experiment. The story is told through a series of progress reports written by Charlie Gordon, the main character and first-person narrator. The progress reports detail Charlie's experiences—both external and internal—as his I.Q. increases and finally deteriorates again after experimental surgery. More…….

Algernon

Algernon is a mouse that earlier underwent the same operation as Charlie. Algernon becomes an expert at running highly complex mazes. Charlie competes with Algernon in maze races. As the experiment progresses, Algernon’s demeanor becomes unpredictable and aggressive. This signals a problem with the experiment. Eventually, Algernon’s abilities radically regress, and he dies. Charlie comes to love the mouse and buries Algernon in his backyard, often placing flowers on the mouse’s grave.

Can anyone help me compare the two novals flowers for Algernon and The Pearl?

please tell me the information as soon as possible!!:)

Can anyone help me compare the two novals flowers for Algernon and The Pearl?
Both stories share a theme. That theme is...becareful what you ask for because you just might get it.

In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie wants to be smart. He feels his life will become better if he could be smart. However, the smarter he becomes, the more he loses. He realizes his friends aren't his friends, and then he discovers he is too smart. His life goes from one extreme to the other. In his case ignorance is truly bliss.

In his quest to become smart he loses everything including his life.

In the Pearl Kino is happily married, poor but happy until Coyotito is stung by the scorpion. After being insulted by the doctor, he and his wife are driven to search for a pearl to pay the doctor. Upon finding the pearl of the world, fortunately by this time Juana has cured Coyotito and it is no longer necessary to pay a doctor. Unfortunately, the news of the pearl has spread and his is faced with the greed and treacherous nature of those around him. The story ends, just as Flowers for Algernon ends, with loss. Coyotito loses the thing which connects him with his past, his family canoe, and the thing which connects him with his future, his son.

Both characters, Charlie and Kino realize too late that their lives were perfect in the beginning and end the story sadly with regret for wanting to change it.

Both characters end up worse than they started. Charlie faces the same fate as Algernon...death. Kino loses his child.
Reply:It's been an awfully long time since I read those, but what occurs to me is that they're both about change. Like, drastic life-changing things that happen to the main person in the story. In one it's some kind of medical thing that makes the person smart and in the other one it's finding this incredible treasure. The constrast would be that in Algernon, things go back to the way they were, and in The Pearl, things can never go back. The other thing is even though they end in different ways, both stories are sad.

That book was terrible.
Reply:Well, the Flowers for Algernon surgery would also imply that in time they'd revert to their original state. A brief glimpse at enlightenment might just make the return to the previous state harder to deal with psychologically.
Reply:Low blow, hope you're proud of your generalization.
Reply:Once a person receives Christ for real, they don't go back unless they so choose. And if they do become apostate, they know full well what awaits them.

Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction short story and subsequent novel written by Daniel Keyes. The short story was first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy %26amp; Science Fiction and won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960. The novel was published in 1966 and was joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel (with Babel-17).

The titular Algernon is a laboratory mouse who has undergone surgery to increase his intelligence. The story is told as a series of "progress reports" written by Charlie, the first human test subject for the surgery, and touches upon many different ethical and moral themes such as the treatment of the mentally disabled.

Although the book has often been "challenged" for removal from libraries in the US and Canada, sometimes successfully, it is regularly taught in schools around the world[5] and has been adapted numerous times for television, theatre, radio and as the Academy Award-winning film

i think id rather have the surgery, as long as i didnt have to go back but if you mean with the regressing too, id probably still be a 'yes give me a lobotomy if you like and take away the religion from my mind ' it like to feel what its liek to be a genius

1) Nobody.

2) She is sad, but sympathetic, and treats him nicely.

Flowers for Algernon...like it or dislike?????

I found it to be completley unrealistic, however it is my friend's favorite book! What did you think about it???

Flowers for Algernon...like it or dislike?????
Flowers For Algernon is science fiction---we don't have the technology to do several of the things in the book, like the operation itself or the subliminal learning machine, so of course it is unrealistic. If realism was the criteria for good literature, then everything from MacBeth to Lord Of The Rings would fail because they are unrealistic. I read this story in 7th grade in 1967 and my students read it in their classes today. There is a reason it has endured all these years.

My favorite aspect of this story is that it teaches adolescents about mental retardation. Kids freely use the word "retard" as an insult, usually in jest, but often seriously. They know it is unacceptable to use racial or ethnic slurs in public, but until they read this story, many think using mental retardation as an insult is perfectly normal. In addition to reading the story, we read articles on IQ and mental retardation so the kids understand the concepts as they read. I'm happy to report that I almost never hear the word "retard" in the hallways afterward.
Reply:I think it is a moving book about what it would be like to have a narrow painful life - be almost magicallly lifted out into a wide and wonderful life and then have to see it slowly fading and the walls closing in around on you again.

If you read about things they are doing with neuroscience and brain scans and things this book gets more "real" all the time.
Reply:I thought it was a very moving book. I have always considered myself intelligent, and to grow up not understanding anything, and then changed so you finally understood, and then have it taken away again! That would be the most horrible thing. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
Reply:It is a wonderful book. Whether it is realistic or not is irrelevant since the book reveals aspects of mankind, which great books tend to do. Moby Dick and the Odyssey are also unrealistic.
Reply:I loved that book. I read it when I was about 12, and just reread it as an adult. It was very moving, and the decline of Charlie made me sad both times.

Maybe not realistic, but a great book.
Reply:Personally, I love the book. I think the ending is very beautifully written.
Reply:One of my all-time favorites.
Reply:I didn't like it.
Reply:i read it when i was in 7th grade. its okay not great but not horrible

2. When does Charlie get drunk with Fay? (if more than one, please list all)

And if anyone knows where a Character vs. Nature example is, please tell me.

2. “And I hate school! I hate it! I’ll stop studying, and I’ll be a dummy like him. I’ll forget everything I learned and then I’ll be just like him.” She runs out of the room, shrieking: “It’s happening to me already. I’m forgetting everything . . . I’m forgetting . . . I don’t remember anything I learned any more!”

4. I wasn’t his son. That was another Charlie. Intelligence and knowledge had changed me, and he would resent me—as the others from the bakery resented me—because my growth diminished him. I didn’t want that.

In Flowers For Algernon, why wasn't Charlie allowed in the lab?

Charlie wasn't allowed in the lab, (short story version), I forgot why!!!

In Flowers For Algernon, why wasn't Charlie allowed in the lab?
Charlie was retarded...He was given an experimental treatment that was suppose to help his retardation.. Had he known what was done to him, the experiment would have been compromised...So he was not allowed into the lab so he could not learn what was done to him. A classic examples of controlling the variables....

What r the external conflicts in Flowers for Algernon?????

One of the more notable conflicts is whether we should interfere with another person's intelligence, even if you have the best of intentions. As you already know, it started to wear off and the protagonist was no longer as smart as he used to be.

What r the external conflicts in Flowers for Algernon?????
?
Reply:when charlie has to take the hard test
Reply:Well, since I read the story and remember it, there are a few external conflicts.

1.) the conflict of his teacher as she struggles with Charlies loss of his abilities and her romantic feelings for him

2.) Charlie's boss who all of a sudden has a supersmart employee that before was just a simple minded person.

Those are the only external conflicts I can think of right now. It was a really long time ago when I read the story.
Reply:-Charlie's brain going back to the way it used to be (i.e. Charlie becoming stupid again)

-The relationship between Charlie and that woman (I forget her name) fading very quickly
Reply:Sad love story...

sad.

What is the tone of flowers for algernon by daniel keyes?
I would say the tone changes as the main character goes through his transitions in the novel. It seems as his mental handicaps improve, the tone was happy, while after the turnaround, it seem very melancholy. .... at least, from what I recall.

Flowers for Algernon question? 10 points!?

How has Charlie changed at the end of the novel? Is he different from the person he is at the beginning of the novel, and if so, how? Do you consider the novel's ending to be tragic or inspiring?

Flowers for Algernon question? 10 points!?
Well:

He was mentally retarded

He gets surgery

He becomes a genius

He loses his intelligence

He becomes retarded again

(when I say retarded, I'm not being mean, I mean he actually had a genetic defect)

Basically, he learns more about people in general. Of course he is different, see above. And I'd say tragic, as he loses his intelligence and basically becomes very lonely (and it is implied that he would die in a few days as an aftereffect of the surgery)

Glad to do your homework for you!
Reply:The difference between Charlie at the beginning of the book and at the end is that he understands the concept of shame.

To me, the key passage in the whole book is Charley's conversation with Fanny Birden when his co-workers sign a petition to get him fired from the factory. She likens Charley's gain in intelligence to Eve eating from the tree of knowledge. Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden and lost their innocence.

In the beginning of the story, Charley didn't understand that his co-workers were playing jokes at his expense. Everything was fun for him. His tragedy is that he got the sense of shame without gaining anything else in return.
Reply:at the beginning charlie is ignorant. he thinks that his coworkers are his friends, but gradually, as he is becoming smarter, he becomes more aware of the world. he falls n love for the first time, and he realizes that there is more to the world than what he knows.

ok, i wouldn't exactly say that charlie is ignorant, because of the connotation, he's just clueless.

he is different because he is more experienced in the ways of the world.

i read the short story a while ago, in the eighth grade.

i think you should go to sparknotes or something, for greater detail.
Reply:THAT IS THE MOST tragic book I've ever read, maybe as tragic or even more than "My SIster's Kepper". Charlie has changed from the beginning of the book since he has been on "the other side". He has been a brilliant genious and is now left with nothing but daily reminders of his previous sucess. He is very different. Although he doesn't remember much of his tranformed "smart" version, he still has memories and a sense of deep loss and confusion when he is forced to become his natural way again.

DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!
Reply:Very tragic, although that's probably why I like the book so much. And I generally don't like fiction. But Charley's situation is so sad. He has to be aware of his limitations and live with the memories of his temporary genius abilities.

I agree with Peppermint's answer.
Reply:umm ive never read that book. sry i cant help.

Explain the significance of the titile flowers for algernon. what does it mean? give examples?

In the end, Algernon dies. The flowers represent his death, and that he'll be remembered. It also signifies that Charlie can't stay genius forever, that has to die in a sense to. We must accept those who are mentally challenged and help them the best we can. Flowers for Algernon is like a symbol, if you will, that even though something may seem great, it doesn't always last, and it may not have been that great anyway. We must accept people for who they really are in their heart.

Explain the significance of the titile flowers for algernon. what does it mean? give examples?
It was for the flowers that Faye and Charlie put on Algernon's grave. Actually, the title is more about how Charlie refers to the flowers at the end of the story - in a way it shows how much he has lost and forgotten.
Reply:Didn't Algernon die at the end? I just figured the flowers represented his death.

Until he was thirty-two, Charlie Gordon --gentle, amiable, oddly engaging-- had lived in a kind of mental twilight. He knew knowledge was important and had learned to read and write after a fashion, but he also knew he wasn't nearly as bright as most of the people around him. There was even a white mouse named Algernon who outpaced Charlie in some ways. But a remarkable operation had been performed on Algernon, and now he was a genius among mice. Reply:i give it a 6
Reply:Oh, yes! Algernon, the mouse. Charlie Gordon the man with the IQ of 68 who undergoes a medical procedure to increase his IQ…. And the teacher that falls in love with him and his newfound intelligence. Wow… that was written in the late 50s and became very popular in the late 60s, after it became a movie with Cliff Robertson toward the end of the decade or so; the movie, “Charly,” was a really, really very touching story that reminds us all of man heroism and determination and the indomitable spirit to overcome obstacles and learn.

Great book! I’m not surprised that it’s still in print. I rate it a 10. I recalled it many years later in college for my other major in therapy and mentioned it and almost the whole class read it before the semester came to an end! Great book.
Reply:I'd give it an 8. I really liked it.
Reply:Oh yes. a 8

Reply:Hey! Same as me, the book is simply adorable. I've been searching online for a copy but coulden't find a free one. I'm gonna try the library, you should too. Report It

Reply:Yes, I read it. That was a really sad sad book. Read it! You won't regret it. Promise.

Reply:Yes. I taught it to my grade 10 English class and most of them really enjoyed it. It's a great book.

The movie is really weird, though.
Reply:I read it when I was a kid.

Flowers for Algernon (real easy points!)?

just tell me somethings you like about charlie gordon. please provide reasoning.

Flowers for Algernon (real easy points!)?
He is humble. Even when he becomes 'smart' he doesn't get full of himself, and when he begins to loose his intellect, he does not weep about.

It has been many years since I read the book, but I still remember Charlie.
Reply:While Charlie may not be what the world labels as "smart", his heart and ability to laugh even in the most difficult situations make him a larger than life person. He may not have the brain power, but he does use the gifts that were given him.
Reply:He's an extremely nice guy. When he starts out, everyone makes fun of him but he's always cheerful and helpful. Later when things have changed he is still trying to help: he comes up with improvements at the factory. Even though he has realized they weren't nice to him, he is still trying to help out.

And at the end he still comes across as basically decent, not wanting to stick around as he knows it might be uncomfortable for everyone.

This makes the arc all the more tragic - he's a nice guy, and didn't particularly deserve to be so disadvantaged to start with, but after gaining all that insight, as he sinks back to his original state, it's now much worse because he realizes all that he has lost.

Do you think the movie "Awakenings" was taken from the movie Charley, and the book "Flowers for Algernon"?

I think so!

Do you think the movie "Awakenings" was taken from the movie Charley, and the book "Flowers for Algernon"?
They have absolutely nothing to do with each other! "Awakenings" is based on a true story. Those people were not "mentally challenged", as Charles Gordon is. Charlie underwent experimental surgery that increased his ability to learn until he achieved genius levels.

You can't have watched both of these films and come to this conclusion I'm certain. As I said, they share absolutely nothing in common. Gordon was born disabled; the others were average people who fell ill then into the state we seen them in; they remain that way till his treatment brings results that do fade, as with Gordon. But, he drops down to his original IQ. Those people are still reasonably intelligent people but are trapped once more in bodies that will not obey them.

Awakenings (1990)

IMDB synopsis:

A new doctor finds himself with a ward full of comatose patients. He is disturbed by them and the fact that they have been comatose for decades with no hope of any cure. When he finds a possible chemical cure he gets permission to try it on one of them. When the first patient awakes, he is now an adult having gone into a coma in his early teens. The film then delights in the new awareness of the patients and then on the reactions of their relatives to the changes in the newly awakened.

NOTE: Y!A isn't allowing me to post with the link to INDB.

The film is based on Oliver Sacks' non-fictional book.

Charly (1968)

NOTE: The title is intentionally misspelled, as this is how Charles (Charlie) Gordon spells it.

IMDB synopsis:

Charlie is a retarded adult male struggling to survive in the world. His frequent attempts at learning, reading, and writing prove worthless. His teacher, Miss Kinian, takes Charlie to the clinic where he is observed by doctors who have Charlie "race" a mouse, Algernon. The mouse is usually the winner thanks to an experiment that greatly raised his intelligence. This experiment is given to Charlie, who at first does not seem affected. However, he gradually becomes more and more educated, eventually becoming a pure genius. Very emotional consequences are involved when Charlie learns the truth of the experiment.

Flowers for Algernon (2000 TV movie)

IMDB synopsis:

Charles Gordon is retarded, and all he wants in life is to be a genius. When he gets picked for experimental surgery, it looks like his dream may finally come true. But the surgery has side effects that could could kill Charlie. Can he survive being just plain old Charlie Gordon, and will his newfound romance survive this test of character?

So, there are huge differences in the two stories. The short story (not novel) "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes was published in 1959. The first film was released in 1968. Sacks' non-fiction "Awakenings" was published in 1969~AFTER "Charly".
Reply:You got it!
Reply:Well, perhaps as proof that a story like that would work, especially as structured around the story of one man, but "Awakenings" is based on the book by Oliver Sacks and real medical cases he handled.

"Flowers for Algernon" help?!?1?

Why does Charlie Gordon go to Miss Kinnians class, and what is his IQ in the beginning of the story?

"Flowers for Algernon" help?!?1?
i remember reading this book years ago! it's a great story.
Reply:You've got to read this book....it is absolutely wonderful. I saw the movie and read the book....very sad. Yes, Charlie is retarded, but seems relatively content with his life until everything changes for him as a result of a scientific experiement. He attends Ms. Kinnian's class because she teaches student's with mental retardation. Through a scientific experiment, Charlie becomes a genius. He falls in love with his teacher and she in turn with him. How it ends is tragic...this is a classic story...you've got to read it for yourself.
Reply:I think his IQ was 68
Reply:Charlie goes to Miss Kinian's class because he is mentally retarded, and he wants to learn and be normal.

I really don't know his IQ because I haven't read the story in a while. Check cliffsnotes.com; there might be something there that can help.
Reply:Charlie is retarded, Miss Kinnian teaches to slow and retared people. She teaches reading and writing. Charlies IQ is not mentioned in the book. But figure it to be about 60-70 because he is functional.

More…….

In "Flowers for Algernon", who is the love triangle between Charlie and ? Could it be Charlie and himself?

Charlie and Ms. Minnian?

Regarding the novel ,Flowers for Algernon, do the scientists ever tell Charlie about the risks of the surgery?

they tell him that surgery is risky but not that there is the potential that he will revert back to his old mental capacity

Regarding the novel ,Flowers for Algernon, do the scientists ever tell Charlie about the risks of the surgery?
no! because he would not have understood, and they really didn't know what would happen. they didn't have a clue that he would revert back to what he was.

Have any of you read the book "flowers for algernon"?

Reply:I did... but I read it many many many years ago....

Reply:I'm not sure what I would have asked...Did you see the movie Charly which was based on this book. Good story
Reply:"Did you ,Charlie, remember the flowers ?"
Reply:I read it back in Middle School
Reply:Yes and I did like it quite a bit. I guess I would ask him why he wanted to have the procedure done. Or what he felt when he realized algernon was dying.
Reply:i heard it was good
Reply:yeah i did, don't remember much though, sorry
Reply:Is that the book where the mentally challenged mind is transformed into an intellectual freak for a brief period of time?

I could not ask him anything... It broke my heart. All I could do would be to cry for him.

and i would have asked him if it was worth it. but i wouldn't ask him while he was smart, i would ask when he went back to.... normal. For him, anyway.

I can't think of anything else. But that book was fantastic.

What's the theme (the moral the book proves) of the book FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON?

That people with disabilities are no different than people without disabilities. That each of us is abled and disabled in some way. Charlie gains intelligence, but does that make him a better human being? Not necessarily. There are several morals in this book, but that is one of the most major.

What's the theme (the moral the book proves) of the book FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON?
mice dont make good pets
Reply:dont experiment on humans
Reply:It's been years since I've read the book but what I took out of it was that people shouldn't try to play god. They went in and messed with the guy's head (to make him smarter) in doing so they actually made him miserable and in the end he went back to the way he was to start with. Those scientist's should have just left him the way he was.

Flowers For Algernon book?

I have a question that is killing me and i need help with it...the question is,

- Debate the following statement. As Charlie matured intellectually, his emotional growth kept pace.

I need a few sentences answering this question. if you could give me a few sentences answering this question I would be so great.

thanks

Flowers For Algernon book?
I remember this book - it was really good. A debate would mean two opposing lines of argument so:

1. The fact that Charlie grew more distant from the people around him that he cared for, and understood that his former workmates had been using him as the butt of their jokes indicates his emotional growth from childlike innocence to an adult evaluation of the world around him.

2. (opposing statement) As Charlie's intellect grew, he became more self-centered like a child. That was seen in his willingness to abandon his "friends" and even the doctors he was working with as he outstripped them in basic intelligence.
Reply:Basically did Charlie act mature as he got smarter or was he able to read but still act like a little kid.

If you read the book, you know the answer.
Reply:But, that's not a question! I'll try helping u:

His emotional growth grew more for his teacher as she taught him Charlie even more.

I dnt understand the question vry much add additional details if u can

Merry xmas
