Recommend some good books for an 18 year old female?

I like;

Flowers For Algernon

The Kiter Runner,

A 1000 splendid Suns

romance/suspense/adventure/sci-fi etc..

a couple of books that I didn't like were The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and The Pigman.

Recommend some good books for an 18 year old female?
Well, first I recommend Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Great scifi fantasy with female main character.

Second, the "Harper Hall Trilogy" by McCaffrey, but these necessarily follow the first two "Pern" books, and those are, shall we say, not exactly kind to women. Women in those 2 books appear to enjoy physical and sexual abuse.

Third, anything from this list (which also includes Flowers):

Most of the reviews in the link above I agree with, although I was not overly enthusiastic about the depressing "Flowers". If the dude was that bright, why was he such a jerk? You'd think he was smarter than that.

Reply:If you like the Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, you may also like Jodi Picoult books such as My sister's Keeper, and Nineteen Minutes (Her best ones).

I also love Sophie Kinsella books if you're looking for a bit of comedy plus romance. All of them are great; Confessions of a Shopaholic, Can You Keep A Secret?, etc.

The Twilight series is great as well; it's romance mixed with a little adventure I guess. I like them too.

Just titles off the top of my head; The Time Traveler's Wife, The Life of Pi, The Secret Life of Bees, The Glass Lake, Harry Potter series, The Lovely Bones.

Hope that helped!
Reply:I had tons of fun reading books by Georgette Heyer. She was a British author who wrote about the elite people in England during the Regency period. That may sound dull when you read that sentence but her books are actualy so much fun. They are full of humor and romance (without any overt sexual scenes). They have adventure and are compulsively good reading material - perfect for reading on vacation or around the poolside. They will not strain your brain, but you will find your vocabulary boosted considerably because she never "writes down" at you.

Some of my favorites are These Old Shades and Devil's Cub. These two go together and after that The Corinthian, Faro's Daughter, The Masqueraders. She wrote about 20 fantastic romantic/adventure novels. Hope you find some. They were out of print, but came back in through Barnes and Noble about 4 years ago. Have Fun!!!
Reply:The Lovely Bones (Alice Sebold), To Kill a MockingBird (Harper Lee), Where the Heart Is (Billie Letts), Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (Fannie Flagg), She's Come Undone (Wally Lamb), White Oleander (Janet Fitch), The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Rebecca Wells), Shopgirl (Steve Martin), The Secret Life of Bees (Sue Monk Kidd), Bridget Jones Diary (Helen Fielding), Good in Bed (Jennifer Weiner), In Her Shoes (Jennifer Weiner), Between Georgia (Joshilyn Jackson), Gods in Alabama (Joshilyn Jackson), The Guy Not Taken (Jennifer Weiner), The Color Purple (Alice Walker), Ordinary People (Judith Guest), The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton), Terms of Endearment (Larry McMurtry), Pay It Forward (Catherine Ryan Hyde), Love Walked In (Marisa de los Santos), Shoot the Moon (Billie Letts), God-Shaped Hole (Tiffanie DeBartolo).

Most girl who like sort of romantic books might like Nicholas Sparks books, especially The Notebook. Also Jodi Picoult is another good author.
Reply:Oh I loved the The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns! They were so inspirational. Even though those two books are my favorite, here is a list of some very well written books that may meet your description:

*The Book Thief

*The Atonement

*Pride and Prejudice

*The Goose Girl (anything by Shannon Hale)

*Sold

*The Five People You Meet In Heaven, or any book written by Mitch Albom

*The Catcher and the Rye

*Animal Farm

*Although this may be a little young, I like the Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras

*Peeps

*So Yesterday

*A Certain Slant of Light

Hopefully these books will help you find the book you desire to read! And good luck!

Reply:Here are some of my favorite teen and some adult novels:

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It's about a girl named Bella who moves to Forks, Washington and runs into a group of vampires. VERY VERY good! I REALLY think you should give it a chance because I'm not into vampire stuff, but it was AMAZING! http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Twiligh...

Pants On Fire by Meg Cabot. It's about a girl who basically has everything (popular best friend, good grades... and TWO boyfriends.) It's really funny because then her friend from eighth grade come back to town (everyone hates him) and she falls head over heals for him too.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Pants-o...

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. It's about four girls who where born as friends. They go through ups and downs together.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Sis...

The Last Summer (Of You and Me) by Ann Brashares was amazing. It may be more of an adult book, but it was fairly good.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Las...

All-American Girl and All-American Girl Ready Or Not by Meg Cabot. It's about an outcast girl who happens to save the presidents life. Suddenly everyone at school wants to be her friend, but she doesn't really care... What she does care about is the presidents son...

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/All-Ame...

Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot. It's about a girl who goes over seas with her boyfriend after (almost!) finishing college. After a bad break up with him, she goes with her friend and runs into someone.... It's a very good adult book!

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Queen-o...

How To Be Popular by Meg Cabot. It's about a girl who comes across an old book in her grandma'a attic called how to be popular. So, she follows the rules of the book hoping to become popular.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/How-to-...

Jinx by Meg Cabot. If you liked Twilight, then you'll like this book. It's about a girl who has bad luck all the time so she moves in with her aunt and uncle. He sister is into witchcraft and I don't want to spoil the rest, but it fairly good.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Jinx/Me...

Teen Idol by Meg Cabot. This is about a girl who has an advice column in her school newspaper. So, when a famous actor comes to her school and she's the only one who knows about it, chaos occurs!

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Teen-Id...

Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen is also pretty good. It's about two girls that are best friends who are having a few issues in the love department.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Someone...

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen is one of my favorites! It's about a girl who had something terrible happen to her and she's learning how to cope with it and befriends an outcast boy.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Just-Li...

The Mediator series by Meg Cabot. I've only read the first two, but they are VERY good. It's about a girl named Suze who moves to California from New York because her mother just remarried. Oh, and Suze can see ghosts...

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Shadowl...

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It's about a guy named Clay who gets these tapes in the mail about why a girl named Hannah killed herself. It's very good and a great page-turner!

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Thirtee...

She Went All The Way bu Meg Cabot. This is a book for more mature people, but it's very good. It's about two people who get stranded in the wilderness.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/She-Wen...

Forever... by Judy Bloom is also pretty good. It's about a girl getting a boyfriend and going through sensual things. It's a little mature.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Forever...

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan is okay. I don't wanna tell you what it's about because it'll just give it all away.
