Algernon

masc. proper name, lit. "with mustaches," from O.Fr. als gernons, from a les "to the, with the" + gernon, var. of grenon "mustache," from V.L. *granonem, from a Gmc. source (cf. granu "mustache").
Reply:soft g, al-jer-non A great book, I haven't heard anyone mention it since I read it in high-school 35 yrs ago.
Reply:My English teachers always pronounced it with a "J" sound, as in "John." So "AL-jer-non" would be the correct pronunciation for Algernon.
Reply:All-jerr-nonn

All (rhymes with ball)

jerr (rhymes with her - begins with the 'j' sound in Jennifer)

nonn (rhymes with John)
