Resentment towards smart people can very from person to person. In some people it can be very obvious that they resent smarter people and in other people it can be a subconscious factor. In Flowers for Algernon it is witnessed when Charlie becomes smart and his friends not longer want to be around him. In addition, when he becomes really smart they all avoid him. However this could also be because they see how awful they were to him and do not want to face him.
